About Violins

The violin is descended from the stringed instruments called the viol family. The violin has had very little changes made to it since Antonio Stradivari "perfected" the model in the early 1700s. There have of course been many other innovative and well-respected makers but Stradivari is certainly the most well-known. The violin's size varies, but it's usually about fourteen inches long and are also made in smaller sizes for young players. The back and sides are made of maple and the top from spruce. The fingerboard is usually made of ebony. The pegs, taipiece and chinrest can vary. They are usually made from ebony also but boxwood and rosewood are quite common. The violin, as with all stringed instruments, is a delicate instrument, which requires proper care and attention so if you are in the market for one, we would be glad to show you how to take care of it.
