The viola is slightly larger than the violin, which gives it a lower pitch and different strings. The violin's strings are E A D G while the viola is A D G C. Because of its larger size and deeper sides, the viola has a more earthy tone quality than the violin. Its rich tones are usually used for inner harmonies in music rather than solo parts or melodies and is a very important supporting instrument.
