About Cellos/Basses

The cello is a larger stringed instrument that is played from a sitting postion with strings A, D, G, and C. These are the same strings as the viola, but the cello is one octave lower in pitch. The bass is even larger and usually played standing up or by sitting on a tall stool with strings G, D, A, and E and is two octaves lower than the violin. These instruments are called "bass" instruments because of their low pitches and their role as the supporting harmonies in music. The cello can also be used as a solo instrument and there are many pieces written for it as such. The bass is not used as a solo instrument very often in classical music but it still has a very important role in the ensemble setting.
